How to Set Up Audiences with the Universal Pixel

Published on

This guide breaks down the process into manageable steps, enabling you to segment users based on their interactions with your site for more personalized campaign efforts.

Audience Pixel Explained

An audience pixel helps you define criteria for how users are grouped into your audience pool based on their site interactions. This segmentation is crucial for retargeting campaigns, allowing you to engage with users who have shown interest in your products or services.

Steps to Create an Audience

  1. Name Your Audience: Begin with a descriptive name for your audience pixel that captures the essence of the group you're targeting.

  2. Select a Rule for Activation:

    • Option 1 - URL Visit: Opt for "view a URL that contains" to add users to your audience when they visit a specific webpage. Input the full URL (e.g., https://www.adpersonam.io/demand-side-platform-demo/) to define this condition.
    • Option 2 - Specific Event: Choose "event is equal to" to include users in your audience based on actions they perform, like purchases or sign-ups. Identify the event that will trigger their addition to the audience.
  3. Define the Trigger:

    • For URL-based Activation: Enter the exact URL that qualifies users for audience inclusion.
    • For Event-based Activation: Select the relevant standard event from a list that signifies the user action of interest.
  4. Categorization (URL-based Activation Only): Define the type of audience you're tracking, such as Lead, Purchase, or Add to Cart. This helps in categorizing the conversion activity effectively.

  5. Finalize Your Audience: After setting up the criteria, click the “Create Audience” button. Your audience pixel is now active, gathering users who meet the specified conditions for future retargeting.

Implementing the Pixel for Audience Building

  • URL-based Segmentation: For audiences segmented by URL visits, the existing Universal Pixel on your site will automatically track and add users to the defined audience pool without needing additional code.
  • Event-based Segmentation: For audiences defined by specific events, you'll generate an additional script code tailored to the selected event. This code should be placed on the relevant pages or linked to the appropriate action. Access this script by clicking on the < > icon next to your audience pixel in the Audience section and follow the given placement instructions.

Note: If a conversion pixel has been generated using the same rule and event, the code will be identical, eliminating the need for additional implementation. However, creating a conversion pixel with the same criteria does not automatically generate an audience.

By methodically setting up audiences with the Universal Pixel, you unlock the ability to conduct targeted retargeting campaigns, re-engaging users with tailored messages based on their prior interactions. This strategic approach not only boosts campaign relevance but also enhances the overall effectiveness of your digital advertising efforts.
